The Pin Backstory
This summer, I launched my second ever Kickstarter to help my "House Puff Pride" pin dreams come true! I was riddikulusly delighted when we raised enough sickles to set all four designs free, yet it also presented another opportunity...
...setting my sights beeyond fandom. Specifically, opening the door to project "BE." Confused? Bear with me and I will explain!
From the earliest days of my small business, it has always been about more than "fandom art" (not that there is anything wrong with this!) I began my small biz during one of the darkest periods of my life, while in recovery for an eating disorder, as a way of saying "stupefy" to perfectionism and a fixation on academic performance. Quite simply, my mind was saved by stories and creativity.
Through the pages of the Harry Potter series, and the stitches on my crochet hook, I was reminded of what truly matters. About how being yourself - bumbles and all - is infinitely more important than "being perfect." I turned to characters like Luna and Newt as my guiding light for this. Even Hermione proved this, through her growing realisation that there are more important things than "books and cleverness."
Accordingly, through teaching myself both crochet and - later - digital art, I made so many mistakes! Even as a business, I have made so many mistakes - yet as I did so, paradoxically I felt infinitely more free than the days I received a row of A*s, or any number on a scale; because I was finally doing something that made my soul smile.
I was finally free from measuring my self-worth by arbitrary numbers. I was focused on words, on stories; on creating, dreaming and - well - being. After all this time, I have never lost sight of how, and why, the roots of Bumble and Be were planted. Yet while I have always spoken about this on instagram and, more recently, in my beastie biographies on here, on first glance my small biz products and beasties (I refuse to call the beasties 'products'!) don't necessarily convey this.
In 2021, I have decided to change this. While i am not saying "so long, farewell" to the fandom world entirely, I do want to expand my non-fandom range! So alongside my bee yourself notepad and silver linings sticker, I am delighted to say that this pin will create a new Golden Trio for Bumble & Be. It also feels like a natural evolution of the "Wellbeing Wizardry" pins I released at the start of this year.
