The S-P-E-W Crew - Enamel Pin || Activist
This pin was inspired by the term that I use for all "Bumble and Be" crochet beasties. #TheSPEWCrew has been used over 700 times now on instagram, which feels surreal to type out, but reminds me just how far my bumbling little business has come!
This pin is part of a golden trio of "Wellbeing Wizardry" designs, which also include my 'Value of Love' heart and coin duo and 'The SPEW Crew' badge. As a passionate mental health advocate, I am overjoyed that i was able to bring them to life as Kickstarter Stretch goals.
I started my small business journey during one of the darkest periods of my life, in hospital treatment for anorexia. As I began my recovery journey, I found my lumos in two things: Harry Potter and Crochet. It was during this time that I began to identify powerful recovery analogies within the series, and none shone stronger the Dobby the FREE Elf.
Like the Malfoys, a mental illness will order you around and make your life a 24/7 sentence. Heres, your bed, now make it... and again... and again... and wash one million socks for good measure. It's a cycle that can seem endless, until the moment you believe that you deserve freedom.
It was against this backdrop that i decided to have a go making my first ever crochet pattern, free-styling an elf who some of you may know as "Sir Bumble" (of Instagram fame!). Though I subsequently branched out into fantastic beasties, they all stemmed from this one elf" my symbol freedom and possibility, not just as a maker but a person.
For this reason, ALL my beasties are part of "The SPEW Crew", because they represent what it means to sock it to those mind muggles - and real life muggles who doubt your dreams. The SPEW Crew is about learning to find your freedom socks and simply BEE YOURSELF.
